How to acquire fundamental skills in basic marksmanship.
What is marksmanship?
Marksmanship involves the skill of consistently and accurately hitting a target with a firearm. A proficient marksman achieves this with minimal rounds fired. For instance, someone using a dozen rounds to hit a target from 80 feet away is not considered skilled, whereas a sniper hitting a target from a mile away with a single bullet is deemed proficient.
The foundation of good marksmanship rests on four key fundamentals:
1. Steady Position: Maintaining a stable stance, grip, and overall position to enhance accuracy and comfort during firing.
2. Aiming: Properly aligning the firearm’s sights and focusing the eyes on the target to improve accuracy through muscle memory.
3. Breath Control: Inhaling and exhaling in a controlled manner to enhance stability during the firing process.
4. Trigger Squeeze: Applying the correct amount of pressure on the trigger to ensure stability and accuracy while firing.
